What is Sin?

Why God's standard matters — and why none of us meet it.

God's standard

The Ten Commandments are not suggestions. They are God's moral law — a perfect reflection of His character. They tell us what is right and what is wrong, not based on culture or opinion, but based on the nature of God Himself.

You shall not lie. You shall not steal. You shall not commit adultery. You shall not covet. You shall have no other gods before Me. These aren't arbitrary rules — they reveal what a holy God requires of the beings He created in His image.

Reflect

According to James 2:10, how many commandments do you need to break to be guilty?

For whoever shall keep the whole law, and yet stumble in one point, he is guilty of all.

James 2:10 (NKJV)

It's not just murder and theft

Jesus raised the bar impossibly high. He said that anger without cause is the same as murder in God's eyes. That looking at someone with lust is the same as adultery. That hating your brother makes you a murderer at heart.

Sin is not just what you do — it's what you think, what you desire, what you harbour in secret. God doesn't just see your actions. He sees your heart. And by that standard, every single one of us is guilty.

But I say to you that whoever looks at a woman to lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart.

Matthew 5:28 (NKJV)

Everyone has sinned

Romans 3:23 does not say 'some have sinned' or 'really bad people have sinned.' It says all. Every human being who has ever lived — except Jesus — has broken God's Law.

This is not about being 'good enough.' It's about being perfect — because that is God's standard. And none of us are. Not the religious leader, not the moral philosopher, not the person who volunteers every weekend. All have sinned.

Reflect

According to God's standard, how good do you need to be to enter heaven?

For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.

Romans 3:23 (NKJV)

The consequence

Sin is not a minor infraction. It is cosmic treason against the Creator of the universe. And the penalty is not a slap on the wrist — it is death. Not just physical death, but eternal separation from God.

This is the reality that makes the gospel urgent. If sin had no consequence, there would be no need for a Saviour. But sin does have a consequence. And it is permanent. That is why what comes next — what God did about it — is the best news you will ever hear.

For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Romans 6:23 (NKJV)
